The chief of the Baton Rouge, Louisiana police department should be immediately removed from his position following the deadly shooting of 37-year-old African-American man Alton Sterling by a Baton Rouge police officer, the head of the city’s National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) chapter, Michael McClanahan, said during a press briefing on Wednesday.

“What I’m calling for today is that the chief law enforcement officer, which is the mayor, to fire the chief of police immediately. I demand for the chief to be fired immediately. I demand that he resign if he has the guts,” McClanahan stated.

On Tuesday, a video emerged of two white Baton Rouge police officers appearing to hold Sterling down on the ground before shooting him multiple times in the back and chest. Police officials have said that the officers were called to the scene following reports that a man was threatening someone with a gun outside a local store.
