At least 10 soldiers were killed and seven others
injured on Wendesday when unidentified militants attacked a military
base in Yemen’s southern Aden province, a security source told dpa.
Two explosive-rigged cars driven by suicide bombers were set off at
checkpoints outside military base near Aden airport, the
source said on condition of anonymity.
Following the two explosions, gunmen believed to belong to the
al-Qaeda terrorist network attempted to storm the base, leading to
clashes with the army forces there, the source said.Al-Solban
It was not immediately clear whether the victims were killed and
injured in the blasts or the clashes.
Army troops and pro-government forces blocked the roads leading to
Aden airport while Saudi-led coalition aircraft secured the area.
No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attacks, which
follows a series of suicide bombings in Aden province.
Pro-government forces, loyal to internationally-recognized President
Abd Rabu Mansour Hadi and supported by the Saudi-led coalition,
recaptured the city of Aden from Houthi rebels last July.
Both Islamic State and al-Qaeda have expanded operations during
Yemen’s civil war, which pits mainly Shiite Houthi rebels against a
range of opponents, including Hadi’s government.
Yemen’s conflict has intensified since March 2015 when the mostly
Shiite rebels advanced on the southern city of Aden, prompting Saudi
Arabia and fellow Sunni allies to start an air campaign
in Yemen against the group.
