A 104-year-old pensioner and at least 36 other beneficiaries in Kruisrivier near Zeerust are still waiting for the government-subsidized RDP houses they were promised over a decade ago. Despite applying for housing in 2011-2012, she has been living in a one-room shack while her grandchildren stayed in a caravan.

Following media attention, the government has provided a temporary wooden structure for the elderly woman’s family, along with a portable cabin. However, the construction of her permanent home has yet to begin.

Councillor Admits Delays, Blames Administrative Errors

The Ward Councillor revealed that 36 beneficiaries, including seven elderly individuals aged between 87 and 104, were inexplicably left out when a housing project was completed in the area. Some names were even wrongly listed under a different municipality.

“The intervention is long overdue,” he admitted. “The department should have acted sooner, but at least they have now provided temporary shelter.”

He expressed concern that some elderly beneficiaries might pass away before receiving their homes, leaving their families without the promised housing. The municipality is working with the Department of Human Settlements and the Premier’s Office to fast-track the process.

Family’s Struggle Continues

The elderly woman’s family remains anxious, fearing she may never see her permanent home. Neighbours share similar concerns, with some elderly residents reportedly worried about dying before their houses are built.
