In the relatively recent past, artificial intelligence was something of science fiction. Now that it is real, AI is growing at an incredible rate, making astounding advancements. Thinking about where AI could be in another decade, much less a century, is mind-blowing. There are several different types of AI. Each possesses its own distinctive benefits and opportunities now and well into the future.
Artificial Intelligence Classification
Each type of AI is classified according to the degree to which the system can emulate the functioning of the human mind. The classification is also based on the machine’s versatility and proficiency level in the world of AI.
Artificial Intelligence in Its Infancy
Reactive machines are the oldest form of AI. As the name implies, these machines can only react to various stimuli. This means they have no functionality based on memory or learning capabilities, unlike the more-evolved generative AI. Therefore, it is no surprise that these systems are extremely limited in functionality.
Learning and Decision-making Machines
Limited memory AI is currently the most common form of artificial intelligence. It includes an expansive range of AI that runs everything from chatbots to self-driving vehicles. Limited memory machines have the capabilities of reactive machines but can also learn and make decisions based on historical data. These machines store this data in their memory to reference for future use. This requires the devices to hold a large amount of training information in their memory. This plethora of data helps the system “learn” over time, increasing task accuracy continuously.
Emotionally In-Tune Artificial Intelligence
Theory of mind AI has yet to be developed to the extent that it can be used in real-world applications. Excitingly, though, the technology is on its way. This level of AI will retain more features similar to the human mind. For example, these machines will be able to understand people’s emotions, thought processes, and beliefs and determine their needs. This innovation is much more complex than the previous two forms of artificial intelligence. With theory of mind AI, the machine must “understand” not only humans as a species but humans as individual beings whose minds have been shaped by their various personal experiences as well as other factors.
Practically Human Machines
Currently, self-aware AI is only a concept. These machines, when developed, will function so similarly to the human mind that they will possess self-awareness. Also, like humans, they will have their own beliefs, emotions, and needs. Many people feel this type of AI should never be developed, as it is so complex it could eventually be detrimental to humanity. Most people would agree that it’s probably a good thing this innovation is a long time from being realized, at least several decades.
A Wide Array of Artificial Intelligence
All types of AI created thus far qualify as artificial narrow intelligence. Although there are currently incredibly complex forms of AI, even the most complicated systems that teach themselves using machine learning and deep learning fall into the ANI category. These ANI systems are programmed to do a particular job and do only that. They can also only perform the task autonomously.
Future Human-like Artificial Intelligence
Artificial general intelligence systems will “think” and function like the human mind. This AGI technology will require people to use machines that are capable of learning, understanding, and perceiving. After all, the systems will regularly perform complicated multi-functional processes.
Super Intelligent Artificial Intelligence
Artificial superintelligence is the most highly evolved form of AI; its range of use is unimaginable but not impossible. You can expect ASI systems to hold far more memory. You will also see faster processes analyzing data and making decisions than those of artificial general intelligence machines.
It’s exciting to consider where our world is headed regarding technology. Many mind-blowing innovations are produced daily, and everything is progressing astoundingly fast. Even while AI is in its early stages, it is hard to imagine a world without at least some form of AI.
