Political analysts are divided on reports that the army has appointed a task force to formulate regulations for a state of emergency.

The presidency denied that Jacob Zuma asked for such a task team to be compiled, but there are those who say that the Union Building does not know what their leader is doing.

Since May 2017, a group of academics released a report entitled “Betrayal” in which they claim that Zuma manages the country through “kitchen cabinets” where decisions are taken outside the formal structures.

The question is now whether the preparation of a state of emergency can be linked to the Eastern Transvaal power base of the ANC. David Mahlobo, former minister of state security, had already since 2016 made allegations of a third power working against the state. It was also Mahlobo who tried to regulate social media in March 2017. In June 2017, Mahlobo spoke about the “color revolution” that took place in other countries such as Ukraine, Iran, and Tunisia.

In the meantime, Mr. Mabuza, Eastern Transvaal premier, has emerged as a power figure and experts say should Zuma have any thoughts of remaining as president, it will come from the Eastern Transvaal.

Political observers say nothing is overlooked or impossible in Zuma’s book. Although Shaun Abraham gave Zuma an extension of time to respond to the hundreds of complaints against him.
