Attorney Michael Hulley announced that Jacob Zuma had fired him. It apparently happened three weeks ago.
According to Hulley, clients do not have to give reasons if they do not want make use of an attorney’s services anymore. Hulley, however, is considered Zuma’s biggest confidant.
Hulley became Zuma’s legal adviser in 2011 and in 2015 the parliamentary standing committee approved R6,3 million unauthorized legal expenses, far exceeding the R1 million budgeted.
Hulley, after calculating, had already earned a steady amount of R1,6 million a year from the state treasury.
Meanwhile, Zuma has appointed a controversial lawyer with Gupta ties as his new legal representative. He is Daniel Mantsha, former board chairman of the arms manufacturer, Denel, and was apparently also involved in the Guptas business dealings.
According to the controversial leaked emails, he would also have provided the Guptas with sensitive information.
