Zondo commission: Standard Bank was threatened by Zwane

Ian Sinton of Standard Bank told the Zondo commission how the former minister of mineral affairs, Mosebenzi Zwane, requested the bank not to close the Gupta accounts and that it was pointed out to the minister that the bank could not violate the laws. Zwane’s answer was that he would then change the law that would make it illegal for banks to close accounts.

Zwane, in the presence of Mildred Oliphant, the then minister of labor, went on to remind the bank that their license to operate a bank would be jeopardized if the bank was no longer prepared to honour government requests.

Jacob Zuma later repudiated statements issued by Zwane, saying that is “not coming from the Cabinet, the President or the Government”.
