“If a farmer’s weapon lies in the safe, he must rather sell it.” Said Henry Geldenhuys, deputy president of TAU SA and chairman of the union’s safety committee.
Geldenhuys says farmers will have to tighten their security measures, know how to use arms and will have to carry guns with them at all times.
The call came after TAU revealed that February 2017 was one of the worst months ever regarding farm attacks and murders.
In February, there were 45 farm attacks, during which 17 people were killed. So far, there have been 71 attacks and 21 murders in 2017.
These statistics are shocking, says Geldenhuys and TAU SA extends its deepest sympathy to the families who have been attacked and family members lost. “We also would like to thank the police and everyone involved in the investigation and arrests of suspects in certain cases.”
“There must be urgent action from government and the police. You plan does not work anymore, “said Geldenhuys.
He pleaded with farmers to avoid becoming a victim, to become involved in local and neighborhood watches and engage in safety initiatives.
“Pray every day for the hand of the Lord to protect our farmers and land.”
