The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued urgent advisories warning residents and travelers of intensifying winter conditions across multiple provinces. Very cold weather is forecast to persist through Friday, particularly affecting the Central Karoo District in the Western Cape and the southern reaches of the Namakwa District in the Northern Cape.

According to SAWS, the departure of a cut-off low-pressure system from the country will not bring immediate relief. Instead, daytime highs in several areas are projected to stay under 10°C, prolonging exposure to harsh, chilly conditions.

These sustained low temperatures carry significant risks. Authorities caution that vulnerable livestock and sensitive crops may suffer losses. Outdoor events and daily activities could face interruptions, and there is an elevated danger of hypothermia for individuals spending extended time outdoors without adequate protection.

Additional alerts have been activated for the Eastern Cape:

  • A Yellow Level 2 warning is in effect for the north-eastern high-altitude zones, where disruptive snowfall may create icy road surfaces and cause traffic delays or closures.
  • A Yellow Level 4 warning covers the coastal stretch between Plettenberg Bay and East London, citing powerful winds and hazardous wave conditions. These marine hazards could complicate sea navigation and pose a risk of small boats taking on water.
  • SAWS also highlighted the threat of damaging wave activity along the Eastern Cape shoreline.

Looking ahead to the weekend, forecasters anticipate partly cloudy skies with continued cold temperatures. Isolated rain showers are possible along both the eastern seaboard and the south-western coastline of the country.

Residents in affected regions are encouraged to monitor official SAWS updates, secure property and livestock where possible, and exercise caution when traveling—especially on high-lying roads or coastal waters.
