Why do we have to foot the bill for corrupt local government?

The South African Local Government Association (SALGA) proposed a number of solutions to address the issue of more than R30 milliard owed by Municipalities to Escom.

None of the proposals will get rid of corrupt local governments, incompetent Affirmative Action local government officials or excessive wasteful expenditure. It will all dig into the pockets of the tax payer.

Amongst the proposals made by SALGA is one that says anybody who owes money to the local Municipality should not be able to renew their driver’s license or vehicle registration. Front National would like to know whether this would apply to taxi drivers as well?

Another proposal stated that tax certificates should not be issued by SARS to businesses who are in arrears with Municipal rates and taxes.

A sharp increase in electricity tariffs is also on the table.

While we firmly acknowledge the fact this situation should be addressed in some way, we also would like to see that it would not only be a select group of people in local communities who end up with the bill. We cannot much longer expect of only a few to provide for everybody. And this certainly does not only apply to electricity!
