There is chaos, confusion, and division at the ANC leadership conference.
The reason for this is that there seems to be a number of votes left, which may affect or even change the winner’s outcome of secretary general.
Ace Magashule, who had come into controversy because of his seemingly improper relationship with the Gupta family, was elected as secretary-general. His majority was only 24 votes.
Now it seems that 68 votes have been cast or not counted, and it may turn the balance in favor of loser Senzo Mchunu, who is a Ramaphosa man.
It is feared that violence can break out if there is a change, as Magashule is a robust Zuma supporter, which means that Zuma will still have a secure grip on Luthuli House.
The leadership of the ANC is now trying to find a “political solution” to the voting problem, but threats of court actions are already being taken. Such a step may void the entire conference.
What the outcome of the ANC leadership will be, will only be announced later.
Meanwhile, there is apparently also division in the Ramaphosa camp, where some insist that the votes be recounted, and others who believe the outcome should be accepted as it is.
