White man sentenced to ‘death’ for k-word

A white man has been sentenced to “death” of a different kind for calling Metro FM communications manager Happy Ngidi a baboon and a kaffir.

On Friday the Roodepoort Magistrate’s Court sentenced Simon Phillips, 39, to a two-year prison term, suspended for five years on condition that he works at the mortuary section of the Chris Hani-Baragwanath Hospital for a total of 720 hours.

The sentence is equal to 18 working weeks at 40 hours a week

This was after the same court found Phillips guilty of crimen injuria last month. Phillips was granted R10 000 bail.

Ngidi was leaving Virgin Active’s parking lot in Constantia Kloof, north west of Johannesburg, last year in July, for home when it happened.
