As soon as the second term of the school year commences, Xhosa will be taught as the mother tongue for more than 250 000 grade 1 children in schools in the Western Cape.

The announcement was made by education minister Debbie Schafer in the Western Cape.

Who will teach the students is not mentioned but it must be assumed that Xhosa speaking teachers will have to be appointed at the schools.
