Safer Festive Season operations yield much needed success in the Western Cape over weekend, turning the tide against crime

In the Nyanga cluster, seven firearms and an assortment of ammunition were seized by forces in Phillipi East (two), Gugulethu (four) and Nyanga (one). Six suspects between the ages of 21 and 33 were arrested for possession of firearms and ammunition.

The three station precincts are part of the identified Operation Lock down areas targeted for serious violent crimes.

In an intelligence-driven operation, on Friday police seized three (3 kg) of Crystal Meth (Tik), arrested a 49 year old suspect in an apartment in Century City. The drugs are estimated at R1.2 million.

In another operation, on the same day still in the Milnerton area, members armed with information pounced on a place in Montague Gardens and discovered a hydroponic laboratory where dagga cultivating operations were carried out. Twelve cultivating cubicles, 234 large pots filled with dagga and equipment such as ultraviolet lights and extractors were confiscated. A 75-year-old male was arrested.

Search warrants executed in Rooivalk and Bosduif Streets in Caledon on Friday resulted in the seizure of 1900 Mandrax tablets valued at R95 000. Two suspects aged 18 and 43 were arrested for dealing and possession of drugs. Both suspects are believed to have links with gangs. In Gugulethu as part of the operations, 153 Mandrax tablets were also seized with an arrest.

Bellville police confiscated abalone in another operation over the weekend.

Large quantities of alcohol were confiscated in operations targeting liquor outlets operating illegally throughout the Western Cape.

All arrested suspects are expected to appear in different courts on Monday 18 November 2019.

The Western Cape Safer Festive Season program was launched at the Phillipi stadium on Friday, 15 November 2019. Increased police visibility is expected throughout the festive season.
