WESBANK — A targeted police operation aimed at reducing gang-related crime in the Mfuleni precinct resulted in the arrest of a man for illegal firearm possession early Sunday. Acting on intelligence to curb violence in Wesbank, officers from the Public Order Police intercepted the individual on Swartkop Road and confiscated an unlicensed 9mm pistol along with six rounds of ammunition.

The incident unfolded during the early hours of June 14, 2026, when law enforcement officials were executing stop-and-search protocols. According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), the suspect was spotted roaming the streets before being detained for a physical search.

During the search, authorities discovered the 9mm handgun concealed on his person. Investigators confirmed that the man lacked the legal documentation and firearm license required to carry the weapon, leading to his immediate arrest for the unlawful possession of both the gun and the ammunition.

Following his detention, the accused remains in police custody. He is expected to make his first appearance at the Blue Downs Magistrate’s Court as soon as formal charges are officially added to his docket.
