Five suspects were arrested over the past two days due to the hard work and determination of Brackenfell SAPS members. The rise of theft out of motor vehicle in Brackenfell was a concern for the management of Brackenfell SAPS, but a breakthrough came on Monday 11 February 2019, after a case was reported where clear video footage was available.
In this instance a case of theft out of vehicle were reported at one complex in Protea Heights. Three other cases were also reported at the same complex. Brackenfell SAPS members, immediately followed up on all information. The investigation led to the arrest of a 45 year old man from Brackenfell on Monday evening. Through further investigation three more suspects (two men and a female age 28, 36 and 36) from Kraaifontein on Tuesday morning. These suspects were all connected to four thefts out of motor vehicle cases. One of the suspects was linked to a further two cases.
At 09:00 Tuesday morning 12 February 2019, members were patrolling the R300 when they saw a structure in the field behind Hoogstede, Brackenfell. Upon approach an unknown man (36 years) came out of the structure. He had a large Cape Union Mart Hunting knife with him which he put in a bag when he saw them. When the members searched the bag they also found a Volcano Gopro camera. He could not give account to how he came to have it in his possession and they arrested him for suspected stolen property.
Further investigation linked the suspect to three thefts out of motor vehicle cases that took place in the early hours of Monday morning in Hoogstede, Brackenfell. The owner of a vehicle in Brand Crescent Brackenfell, whose vehicle was broken into, identified the goods found on the suspect as his. He also identified a Leatherman knife to be his. This knife was found in Alpha Street, Brackenfell where a vehicle was also broken into.
This suspect could already be linked to three theft out of motor vehicle cases.
The possibility of linking all of the above suspects to other theft out of motor vehicle cases in Brackenfell is being investigated.
