Vehicle search recovers 6 firearms, Lentegeur

Vigilant members attached to the Lentegeur Crime Prevention Unit, on the night of 28 February 2020, at 23:00, arrested a 54-year-old male and a 25-year-old female for the possession of prohibited and unlicensed firearms and ammunition.

The members were conducting routine patrols in Lentegeur when they noticed a white Hyundai Elantra, the driver and passenger appeared nervous and suspicious and members pulled the vehicle over. The passenger refused to comply, got out of the vehicle and left the scene.

Upon searching the vehicle, members noticed that the back panels of the front seats were tampered with, and upon searching found six firearms of different calibres, several firearm magazines filled with ammunition and three bags of loose ammunition, hidden in the back of the seats.

The serial numbers of four of the firearms were filed off. The driver was arrested and the female suspect was later arrested at her residence. Both suspects will appear in the in the Mitchells Plain Magistrates’ Court once charged.

The Western Cape provincial commissioner, Lieutenant General Yolisa Matakata commended the members for ensuring that unlicensed firearms and ammunition are removed from the communities.
