After the Western Cape train services have already come to a halt as a result of vandalism, Metrorail announced a multimillion-rand plan in a desperate attempt to protect their assets.

A wall costing R68 million will be erected within a distance of 20 km near Khayelitsha.

These are the costs that have to be paid because the failing state cannot maintain law and order, and it is not a foregone conclusion if the plan it will work. In other places where concrete walls are built, it is merely broken or damaged so that people can move where they want.

There have already been calls that the old Railway Police should be reinstated, but there seems to be no political will.
