Following the sentencing of rapist and murderer, Luyanda Botha, who was handed down three life sentences for raping and killing 19 year old University Cape Town student Uyinene Mrwetyana.

Police Minister, General Bheki Cele has applauded the team who worked tirelessly on the murder case.

The Western Cape SAPS multi-party investigative team consisting of detectives, members dealing with missing persons and tracing teams secured a conviction.

The Minister has commended the sterling work of the detectives. “Thanks to the team, Mrwetyana’s family and friends as well as the whole country now know what happened and hope this will bring them some closure.”

Minister Cele added “This success doesn’t mean we must now rest on our laurels, but it does speak to our response as the South African Police Service to the President’s call for the police to put extra effort in tackling crimes committed against women and children,” Cele concluded.
