Five suspects were swiftly arrested on the night of 17 March 2022 at about 21:50 by members of the Provincial Extortion Task Team near the Nyanga taxi rank.

The arrests followed after the members heard gunshots going off in the vicinity where they were patrolling. The members saw a minibus taxi with five occupants and searched it.

Two 9mm pistols with ammunition were confiscated, and the occupants arrested.

The suspects, five males, aged between 44 and 53 will appear in the Athlone Magistrates court on charges of possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition once they have been charged.

In unrelated matters Mitchell’s Plain police together with the Cape Town Tactical Response Team arrested three suspects aged between 40 and 50 for the possession of drugs in Bontebok Street, Eastridge and Hazeldene taxi rank respectively.

The members confiscated a total of 223 heroin straws, two packets consisting 20 and 15 gram crystal meth, 23 smaller packets crystal meth, 102 and a half mandrax tablets and a undisclosed amount of cash.

The suspects are due to make their respective court appearances in the Mitchells Plain Magistrates court on Tuesday, 22 March 2022.
