The SAPS is determined to root out corruption within its ranks. On 9 April 2019, detectives from Kensington and members from AGU arrested members attached to Kensington police station on charges of corruption and defeating the ends of justice. The suspects aged 25 and 41 were employed as a constable and reservist respectively.

According to information on hand, on 1 April 2019, the arrested members executed a search warrant at the residence of a merchant in Kensington where a substantial amount of cash and Mandrax tablets were seized and a suspect arrested. However, after arriving at the police station only a portion of the tablets seized were booked in as being found abandoned and the suspect was released without being charged.

The two suspects are to appear in Cape Town Magistrates Court on 11 April 2019, Western Cape Provincial Commissioner, Lt General Khombinkosi Jula has expressed concern that those entrusted to maintain law and order find themselves on the wrong side of the law. He reiterated the commitment of the SAPS to root out bad apples within its ranks.

“There is no room for corrupt police members in this organisation, our mandate is to fight crime and bring perpetrators to book including our own, we trust that these arrests will send a warning to other would be criminal”, says Lt General Jula.
