Efforts by the Western Cape police to keep our communities crime free and put the perpetrators of the law behind bars turned out to be successful when three suspects were arrested on charges of kidnapping and possession of prohibited firearms and ammunition in separate cases.

On Wednesday, 24 April 2024 at 20:00, members of Grassy Park SAPS noticed a group of men standing next to an Isuzu LDV. One of the men placed his hand under his jacket when he saw the police members. The members immediately stopped and searched him and found a firearm and 13 rounds of ammunition in his possession. The 38-year-old man was arrested on a charge of possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

Further investigations revealed that the firearm was reported stolen in Strandfontein earlier this month.

The suspect will appear in the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court on Friday, 26 April 2024 on the mentioned charge.

In an unrelated matter, on 24 April 2024 at 20.00 members of Maitland Flying Squad were assisting a car tracking company, to trace a silver Corsa with registration CAA 296 249 that was hijacked in Mfuleni area with the victim inside the vehicle. The members spotted the vehicle at the corner of Robert Sobukwe and Stellenbosch Arterial and pulled it over. The occupants, two suspects aged 31 and 33 were arrested, and the victim was also found inside the vehicle.

As the search continued, two firearms were recovered inside the vehicle. None of the two suspects were in possession of a valid license to possess the mentioned firearms.

The two suspects were detained at Bishop Lavis SAPS on charges of kidnapping and possession of prohibited firearms and ammunition.

The Western Cape Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Thembisile Patekile commended the members and welcomed the arrests and seizures of unlicensed firearms.
