The Western Cape Police Management has welcomed the sentencing of Odwa Nkololo to three life sentences at the Cape High Cape court today, 28 August 2018, for the Rape and Murder of Iyapha Yamile.

In addition, sentencing for the rape of a seven year old girl, also took place. The late Iyapha Yamile went missing on Friday 31 April 2017 in Town, and her body was found about 30 meters away from where she was last seen on 1 May 2017 at about 07:45.

The Family Violence Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS) investigated the cases and arrested the suspect with the help of DNA samples.

It was during the investigation that it was discovered that Odwa Nkololo had also raped a seven year old girl previously. He was therefore found guilty of Murder and two counts of Rape.

The Western Cape Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Khombinkosi Jula, praised the FCS detectives for securing a conviction, and subsequently the sentencing.

Crimes against women and children remain a priority for the SAPS in the Western Cape. General Jula has vowed that police in this province, which is plagued by incidents of crime against children, will intensify efforts to eradicate the scourge.
