A violent incident at AZ Berman High School has left three pupils injured after a stabbing that took place on the school grounds shortly after noon on Tuesday.
According to police, the attack occurred during the lunch hour. A spokesperson for the Western Cape Education Department confirmed the alleged assailant is a Grade 10 pupil who stabbed three fellow learners.
The school day was concluded early following the incident. Outside the school, concerned parents gathered, expressing deep anxiety over the safety of their children. They highlighted that the school is situated in the Tafelsig community, an area they describe as unsafe, and that the violence has now spilled onto school premises.
The incident raises questions about security in educational facilities. It occurs against the backdrop of a previously signed cooperation agreement between the national Education Minister and the Police Minister, which outlined a joint strategy to ensure schools are safe environments.
One parent confirmed receiving an alert about the stabbing this afternoon. She stated that, according to the information she received, a school driver was used as the weapon in the attack.
Police officials confirmed they are investigating the matter. No arrests have been made at this time, and the case is being investigated as assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
