During the winter school holiday, the Cape Education Department, and in effect the taxpayer, cost more than R500 000 for theft and vandalism in nearly 30 schools.

Computers, stoves and ovens were stolen at the schools and the worst areas were in the Cape Winelands and the Eastern Suburbs.
