A wave of fear has swept through the community of Samora Machel in Cape Town after four high school pupils were shot and killed within just 30 days. The latest victim a 15-year-old Grade 10 learner was gunned down on Wednesday morning while walking to school to write an exam.
A Targeted Attack on Youth?
Residents and community leaders are alarmed by what appears to be a deliberate targeting of schoolchildren. According to reports, Azani was separated from her group moments before she was shot. Her family, devastated by the loss, recounted how her younger brother discovered her body with her school bag still on her back.
A community Policing Forum (CPF) spokesperson confirmed that four pupils have been killed in recent weeks but said police are still investigating whether the attacks are linked. “We are not sure if this is an attack or just violence, but it seems to be targeting young people, especially learners,” he said.
Community Outrage and Calls for Action
In response to the killings, local youth and activists organized a march, supported by community figures, including a well-known local DJ, to demand safety for students. Ward Councillor Som Daga highlighted unemployment and gang violence as key factors driving the surge in crime.
“The youth are saying unemployment is a major issue leading to these criminal activities,” Daga said. He also urged young people to join neighborhood watches to help identify perpetrators.
Safety Measures Ahead of Exams
With final exams underway, parents are fearful for their children’s safety. A councillor assured that police and CPF patrols would be increased to protect students. However, many remain skeptical, demanding more urgent intervention from government and law enforcement.
As investigations continue, the grieving families of the four slain pupils are pleading for justice—and for an end to the violence terrorizing their community.
