A 19-year-old was gunned down on a Steenberg rooftop Saturday in a suspected gang attack, adding to the Western Cape’s relentless firearm violence.
Police spokesperson Sergeant Wesley Twig said the teen was shot in the chest while fleeing alleged Mongrels gang members. Medical personnel declared him dead on the scene.
Since January, over 2,000 people have been shot in the province, with 340+ firearm victims in May alone. Police Minister Senzo Mchunu confirmed guns remain the leading murder weapon, followed by knives.
The Western Cape has 90–130 active gangs with 100,000+ members. While SAPS deploys additional officers, communities demand “deeper action beyond policing.”
