A teenager drowned at Monwabisi Beach in Cape Town late on Sunday afternoon, the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) said.
NSRI Strandfontein duty crew were activated by the Transnet National Ports Authority at 5.10pm following reports of a drowning in progress at Monwabisi Beach, NSRI spokesman Craig Lambinon said.
Two NSRI sea rescue craft and rescue swimmers responded to the scene, along with various government rescue services and the EMS/AMS Skymed rescue helicopter.
“On arrival on the scene a search commenced for a 17-year-old male, from Khayeliysha, who reportedly went missing in the surf while swimming with his brother at the main beach at Monwabisi,” he said.
During a search the teenager’s body was spotted in the surf and recovered from the water by NSRI rescue swimmers. He was brought to the beach where paramedics initiated cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), but after all efforts to resuscitate the teenager were exhausted he was declared dead.
Police opened an inquest docket and the family were transported to a police station by Western Cape government health EMS ambulance where police trauma counsellors were providing grief counselling to the teenager’s family, Lambinon said.
Emergency services and the NSRI conveyed sincerest condolences to the family and friends of the teenager.
