Suspect shot dead after stabbing policeman in Knysna

STABBING – Tsitsikamma police, in the Garden Route, Knysna, are investigating a case of attempted murder after a police officer was stabbed several times with a screwdriver while on duty on Monday morning.

Police spokesperson, Captain Malcom Pojie, said that members of from the Knysna K9 unit were called out to a scene where two men were fighting in Main Street near a garage.

Pojie said a sergeant was stabbed several times when he attempted to intervene between the two fighting men. The police officer sustained visible wounds to the head.

“During the scuffle they fell to the ground, the suspect was on top of the officer. The police officer’s gun went off and the suspect was shot in his abdomen, unfortunately he succumbed to his injuries and passed away at hospital,” said Potjie.

Potjie said as procedure a case of murder would be transferred to The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) for further investigation.
