The National Commissioner of Police, General Khehla John Sitole has welcomed the arrest of three men but at the same time condemned the killing of a 30-year-old Constable in Crossroads, Nyanga.

On the night of 8 June 2020, members from Nyanga police station were on patrol when they observed a spaza shop that was still open. They went in to investigate in terms of the Disaster Management Regulations when a man emerged from behind them and started shooting at the members. The Constable was seriously wounded and she died later on.

Other police members fired shots at the fleeing suspect. He fell a short distance away from the scene and was taken to a medical facility. The 22-year-old suspect remains in hospital under police guard.

Investigations into this shooting continued and two other suspects aged 24 and 28 were subsequently arrested.

The family and colleagues of the deceased police official are receiving trauma counselling while condolences from SAPS management are pouring in.

“It is disheartening when those who are entrusted to protect communities are attacked while executing their duties”, said General Sitole.

The name and details of the Constable will be released once all family members have been notified. The colleagues of the police Constable described her as a brave and dedicated soul, with a positive outlook on life.
