The vigilance of police deployed to safeguard motorists and pedestrians during high visibility patrols led to the arrest of a 36-year-old man on charges of driving whilst under the influence of liquor and bribery.

On Tuesday, 21 March 2023 at about 02:55 Mossel Bay police members were on patrol in Bland Street, Mossel Bay when they spotted a vehicle acting suspiciously.

They brought the vehicle to a halt and approached the driver. As members approached him, the driver made a financial offer to the members in an effort to evade arrest. The members promptly responded and arrested the man. Police also confiscated a substantial amount of cash found in his possession.

The suspect remains in custody. He is scheduled to appear in the Mossel Bay Magistrates’ court on Thursday, 23 March 2023 on mentioned charges.

In an unrelated matter, later the same day 21 March 2023 at about 14:00 Groot Brakrivier police operationalised information and conducted a raid at an unlicensed liquor outlet at Wolwedans, Groot Brakrivier. Police confiscated 23 crates of a variety of beer brands and arrested the owner on a charge of selling liquor without a licence.

The 38-year-old suspect will appear in court once charged.

Garden Route District Commissioner, Major General Norman Modishana, thanked the members for their vigilance. Maj Gen Modishana also commended the members for the arrest of the suspect who attempted to bribe them. “These arrests are all in line with concerted efforts by police to eradicate drug and alcohol abuse in rural communities as well as to rid society of corrupt elements”, he concluded.
