The SAPS commitment to rid the streets of illegal firearms and ammunition produced a successful outcome. On 16 February 2020, at about 21:47, members attached to Mitchells Plain Crime Prevention Unit were busy conducting crime prevention duties in the Eastridge area when they acted on a tipoff regarding a firearm being kept at a residence in Maroela Street, Eastridge, Mitchells Plain.
Upon searching the residence, members discovered a 9mm pistol with several rounds of ammunition. It was later established that the firearm was reported stolen in Langebaan.
Members arrested a 36-year-old male suspect who faces a charge of possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition and possession of stolen property and is expected to appear in court soon.
