On the night of 13 November 2019, at about 21:30, members of Maitland Flying Squad were informed about a vehicle that was hijacked in the Steenberg area. The vehicle was fitted with a tracking device.

The hijacked vehicle passed members and refused to stop and, thereafter, a high speed chase ensued. The suspects collided with a SAPS vehicle during the chase and the occupants fired shots at police members.

The vehicle was eventually pulled over and four suspects jumped out of it in an attempt to flee. Three suspects between the ages of 18 and 36 were arrested and detained on a case of attempted murder, possession of hijacked vehicle, possession of prohibited firearm, possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition and reckless and negligent driving.

The accomplice who managed to evade arrest, is still at large.

An unlicensed 9mm pistol, 12 rounds of ammunition and a .38 Special revolver with serial number were seized on the scene. The suspects will appear in Wynberg Court on Monday, 18 November 2019 on the mentioned charges.
