WESTERN CAPE — A major breakthrough has been achieved in the investigation into the murder of DA candidate councillor Sinovuyo Miranda Dyokwe, with law enforcement officials apprehending the alleged mastermind behind her tragic death.
Acting on crucial tips from the community, a joint tactical operation was executed in Parklands to track down the 37-year-old suspect, who had been successfully evading authorities since the crime. The high-stakes arrest was carried out on Saturday, 25 July 2026, by a collaborative team comprising Provincial Serious Violent Crime Investigation (SVCI) detectives and the Special Task Force. Following intensive investigative work, authorities have positively connected the suspect to the fatal shooting.
Detectives uncovered that the local politician was trapped in an extortion racket prior to her death. According to preliminary case details, she was being forced to pay protection money. When she ultimately refused to continue funding the illicit demands, she was subjected to severe threats.
The situation culminated in tragedy on Friday, 20 June 2026. After wrapping up voter registration duties in Dunoon, Ms. Dyokwe was heading back to her residence. Investigators believe she was trailed by two armed gunmen during her commute, who then ambushed and fatally shot her.
During the tactical raid that led to the mastermind’s capture, officers confiscated critical evidence. This included the vehicle allegedly utilized by the hitmen during the assassination, as well as seven mobile phones that are now being forensically analyzed to build a stronger case.
The accused is scheduled to make his first court appearance on Monday, 27 July 2026, at the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court. He will be facing formal charges of murder and extortion.
Western Cape Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Luyanda Damoyi, publicly praised the SVCI detectives and the Special Task Force members for their relentless dedication and perseverance in solving the case.
Authorities have emphasized that the probe is far from over. Detectives are actively following up on new leads, and additional arrests are anticipated as the manhunt for other accomplices continues.
