Police operations by the respective units to ensure that offenders are brought to book in this province resulted in the arrest of suspects in possession of unlicensed and prohibited firearms and ammunition of Wednesday, 14 December 2022

Police members of the Maitland Flying Squad pursued information pertaining a shooting incident in Heideveld.

When they entered a local shopping centre, they saw an unknown man who tried to flee when he saw the patrol vehicle. They gave chase and apprehended and searched the suspect.

The 42-year-old man was arrested and detained on a charge of possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

In an unrelated police intervention members of Operation Restore, deployed in Nyanga, responded to information about a firearm at an address in Hani Street .

Upon arrival at around 23:45, they searched the premises and confiscated a 38 special revolver with ammunition. They arrested and detained a 66-year-old man on a charge of possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

Meanwhile Manenberg police were busy with patrols when they were informed about an unknown man in possession of a firearm. When the patrol vehicle drove down Suurberg Road, they saw the man who fitted the description.

The suspect fled the scene with police members in pursuit. They apprehended and searched the male and confiscated a 9mm pistol with ammunition. The 24 year old was arrested and detained on a charge of possession of a prohibited firearm and ammunition.

Once charged the suspects are expected to make their respective court appearances in the Athlone Magistrates court on the mentioned charges.
