The vigilance of members attached to Da Gamaskop SAPS led to the arrest of a 32–year-old man from Thembalethu, George on the night of 6 August 2021, who is scheduled to appear in the Mossel Bay magistrates’ court on Tuesday, 10 August 2021 in connection with a murder of a Bangladeshi man at his shop in Mossel Bay.

Preliminary investigation reveals that the suspect was part of a group of four who accosted a foreign-owned shop (Bangladeshi) situated in Sampson Street, Extension 3, Da Gamaskop in Mossel Bay at approximately 19:35.

It is further alleged that two of the suspects, one armed with a firearm entered the shop, went straight towards the counter where the deceased was standing and shot him in the chest at point-blank. They then proceeded to the sleeping quarters attached to the shop where they found another victim and shot him in the leg.

A witness, who saw what was happening, managed to escape injury when he fled from the scene through the door that was locked from outside by a third suspect. He bumped the door open and witnessed how four suspects, two who were inside the shop, one blocking the door from the outside and a fourth unknown suspect, ran towards Protea Park where they boarded a Toyota Quantum minibus and sped off.

The victims were transported to the local hospital where the one shot in the chest succumbed to his injuries sustained. The names cannot be revealed yet.

Meanwhile a look-out was transmitted to all vehicles on air about the incident and the wanted suspects. Members attached to Da Gamaskop Vispol followed up information received from eyewitnesses who saw the suspects disembarked from the Quantum, got into a white Polo and proceeded further.

Vigilant members from Da Gamaskop Vispol who responded rapidly, spotted the VW Polo travelling on the N2 towards George and were in pursued when they noticed the vehicle briefly stopped and suspects ran into the adjacent bushes between the George Airport and town. The driver then proceeded towards George. He was pulled over and arrested on the spot. Members confiscated the vehicle as well as clothing that will be subject to forensic analyses.

Meanwhile a massive manhunt is underway with the deployment of K9 members from George and Mossel Bay in search of the remaining three suspects that’s still at large.

Anyone who might have any information regarding the whereabouts of these suspects is requested to contact the investigating officer, Sgt Adele Binneman at the Da Gamaskop Detectives at 044 606 2272, 082 451 1402 or Crime Stop at 08600 10111.
