Members of several SAPS units deployed in Mitchells Plain area have intensified their efforts to safeguard the communities during the festive season and it resulted in several firearms and ammunition recovered.

On Sunday, 15 December 2019, at about 06:30, members of Mitchells Plain SAPS were busy with crime prevention patrols in Klipspringer Street, Beacon Valley when they spotted a suspicious male who started running when he saw them. The members gave chase and saw the suspect hiding an object in a tree.

When police checked the place where the suspect had hidden the object, they found a black firearm, no serial number, wrapped with blue cello tape with a magazine and two 9mm rounds. Police arrested a 33 year old male. The suspect faces a charge of altering /tampering with the serial number of a firearm and ammunition.

In an unrelated incident, on Sunday, 15 December 2019 at about 04:30, members of the Anti Gang Unit were busy with crime prevention patrols in Netbal Street, Beacon Valley when they were stopped by a community member, who complained that he had been shot by a person known to him.

When police arrived at the residence of the suspect and searched the premises, they found a black 870 Remington shotgun, with serial number, four .38 Special rounds, six 9mm rounds and one .22 round in a cupboard. Police arrested a 50 year old male who is facing a charge of unlawful possession of firearm and ammunition.

On Saturday, 14 December 2019 at about 23:00, members attached to Operation Lockdown were busy with crime prevention duties in Gideonskop Street, Tafelsig, when they stopped and searched a suspicious male. While searching the suspect, police found a black Z88 pistol with serial number on (black insulation tape on the grip), with magazine and 14 rounds in his possession. Police arrested this 24 year old male. The suspect faces a charge of unlawful possession of firearm and ammunition.

The suspects are expected to appear in the Mitchells Plain Magistrates Court on Tuesday, 17 December 2019, on the mentioned charges.
