Seven men arrested for abalone possession, bribery in Cape Town

Seven men were arrested on Friday in the Delft South area, on the outskirts of Cape Town, for possession of abalone and bribery, Western Cape police said.

Spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Andrè Traut said at around 2am, Delft police pulled over a suspicious vehicle with four men inside.

“The vehicle was searched and six empty bags with a distinctive marine odour was found. The men were then accompanied to the address to which they were en-route to where police discovered 743 units of abalone in a fridge with an estimated value of R200,000,” Traut said.

“The owner of the residence attempted to bribe the two officers by offering them R15,000 for their freedom.”

Traut said that the owner, two other men who were found at the house and the four men who were in the car were arrested for the possession of abalone and bribery.

All seven, aged between 27 and 39, are expected to appear in the Blue Downs Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
