An investigation conducted by members of Provincial Organised Crime led to the conviction of 35 year old Siviwe Gugaza for various charges such as robbery aggravating, possession of prohibited firearm on Tuesday, 25 June 2019, at Khayelitsha Court.

The sterling investigation by the Unit ensured that Gugaza will serve an effective 10 years imprisonment. His sentence was as follows:

Count 1: Robbery with Aggravated Circumstances – 14 years imprisonment of which 4 years suspended for 5 years.
Count 2: Possession of a Prohibited firearm 12 years imprisonment of which 4 years are suspended for 5 years.
Count 3: Unlawful Possession of Ammunition 12 month’s imprisonment.

In another court case, Anele Masingile aged 33, was convicted on Wednesday, 12 June 2019, at Khayelitsha Regional Court and sentenced to 14 years imprisonment of which four years were suspended for five years for hijacking.

On 16 April 2019, a member of Khayelitsha SAPS was on his way home when he witnessed a car being hijacked in front of him at Lansdowne Road by two unknown males. He confronted the suspects who already took control of the hijacked vehicle. One of the two suspects started to fire shots at police the member and he returned fire and wounded one of the suspects who was inside the hijacked car. His accomplice managed to evade an arrest.

The Western Cape management welcomed the sentence and commends the investigation team for ensuring the conviction of the perpetrators.
