Several suspects arrested by members attached to Maitland Flying Squad were put behind bars during the ongoing festive season operations conducted on 24 December 2020.

On Thursday, 24 December 2020 at 20:40, Maitland Flying Squad members received information about a silver Nissan Qashqai that was involved in a house robbery in Malmesbury earlier this month. Members patrolled Voortrekker Road, Bellville, where they spotted the vehicle at the Caltex Garage. They pulled the vehicle over and found two foreigners in the vehicle. They searched the vehicle and found two firearms, a Taurus 9mm with 4 rounds that was stolen in Roodepoort and a Canik 9mm with eight rounds.

The suspects aged 18 and 23 were arrested for the possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition and are due to appear in the Bellville Magistrates Court on Monday 28 December 2020 on the mentioned charges.

Later the evening at 22:20 members of Maitland Flying Squad received information regarding a grey Nissan Almera that was coming from Hawston to Khayelitsha with a shipment dagga. Members spotted the vehicle standing at the Shell Garage Firlands, Gordons Bay. The three occupants in the vehicle tried to chase away but was apprehended. After searching the vehicle, three bags of dagga was found in the boot of the vehicle weighing 9.316 kg and with a street value of R112 000.

Three male suspects aged 24, 27 and 35 respectively was arrested and detained at Gordons Bay SAPS for possession and dealing in dagga. The suspects will appear in the Strand Magistrates Court on Monday 28 December 2020 on the mentioned charges.

Western Cape Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Yolisa Matakata congratulated the members for the quick response that led to this success. She urged members of the community to be the eyes and ears of the police as this will save the lives of the innocent by reporting suspected criminal activities at their local police stations or calling Crime Stop number 08600 10111.
