Rondebosch police recover firearm after coming under fire

The endeavours of police to create a safe and secure environment for the respective communities resulted in the apprehension of five suspects, aged between 25 and 46, during the early hours of the morning of 18 May 2018 for being in possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition in Manenberg.

Their encounter with the long arm of the law started when members of Rondebosch police spotted the suspects breaking into a motor vehicle. They sped off when they noticed police presence and during a high speed pursuit they shot at the police vehicle.

In Manenberg the suspects were forced to stop and arrested for attempted murder, possession of an unlicensed 9mm pistol and ammunition and theft out of motor vehicle.

Fortunately no one was injured during the incident. The suspects are due to make a court appearance once they have been charged.

In an unrelated matter a 46 year old man was apprehended in Philippi East, also with an unlicensed firearm. Members were conducting a crime operation in the area when they were alerted of a firearm at the suspect’s shebeen in Mkhombe Street, Lower Cross Road. Their search led to the discovery of a 7.62mm pistol.

The suspect is scheduled to make a court appearance in Wynberg for the possession of an unlicensed firearm.
