Robbers quickly rounded up after cash-in-transit heist

ARMED ROBBERY – Two men were arrested shortly after a brazen cash-in-transit robbery at a shopping centre in Parow, Cape Town, on Saturday afternoon, Western Cape police said.

A cash-in-transit guard was exiting the centre and walking towards the cash van just before 1pm, Hawks spokesman Lieutenant Lloyd Ramovha said.

The robbers pointed handguns at him, grabbed the box of cash, and fled the scene on foot. However, a passing police vehicle “disturbed them”, resulting in them dropping the cash box and attempting to run away, he said.

“They were apprehended after their efforts to get away were thwarted. Preliminary investigation revealed that the handguns used were actually toy guns.”

The two men, both aged 36, were due to appear in the Bellville Magistrate’s Court on Monday on a charge of armed robbery, Ramovha said.
