Thorough investigation by a detective who ensured a heavy prison sentence being imposed on a rapist was lauded by the SAPS management recently. This week, the Eden Cluster Commander, Major General Oswald Reddy, on behalf of the SAPS National and Provincial Management, handed over certificates to well-deserved recipients, praising them as a special breed of investigators with special skills to deal with sexual offences decisively, but with the necessary empathy towards the victims.
Sergeant Emmerencia Booysin who is attached to the George Family Violence, Child protection and Sexual offences Unit was awarded a Certificate of Commendation by the National Commissioner of Police, General Khehla Sitole, for outstanding service rendered. She was instrumental in the investigation into the rape of a 5 year old girl at Touwsranten near Wilderness, George on 18 June 2017 that resulted in a 22 year prison sentence.
Investigation at the time revealed that the victim was forced into the bushes where a 19-year-old man raped her. Members of the public heard a noise coming from the bush and went to investigate when they found the two. They immediately informed a family member of the incident. Upon examining the child, her mother discovered that she had been sexually violated. She immediately alerted authorities.
Vigilant members attached to the George police, Warrant Officer Jacques Starbuck and Sergeant Garshen Williams, promptly responded to the incident and an investigation at the scene ensued. Their swift response led to the arrest of the suspect who was convicted for this horrendous act during August 2018. The mentioned arresting officers were rewarded with Certificates of Commendation from the Western Cape Provincial Commissioner.
The Provincial Commissioner also issued a certificate of appreciation to Mr CD Mintoor, a member of the public, who provided valuable information about the incident to the police.
Maj Gen Reddy thanked the three police officials for their commitment and dedication during the handing over of the certificates earlier this week. Their efforts are in line with the approach to curb gender based violence as well as crimes against women and children and to bring the perpetrators thereof to justice.
