Police’s continuous efforts to deal with the scourge of crime in Nyanga led to the arrest of seven suspects for various crimes. Three suspects aged 29, 35 and 43 were arrested on 9 June 2020, after police found a prohibited firearm in their possession.

The members were on the lookout for a Toyota Avanza that was reported hijacked in Nyanga and while driving in Govan Mbeki they came across a BMW with five occupants who acted suspiciously when they saw the police. The driver tried to flee but the police were quick to stop him. When the vehicle stopped all suspects fled, but three suspects were arrested and a firearm without a serial number and 16 rounds of ammunition were confiscated.

Meanwhile a 30-year-old woman was arrested for a case of murder which occurred on Tuesday last week in Crossroads where the deceased was found with three gunshot wounds in Sondela Informal Settlement.

All four suspects aged 29, 30, 35 and 43 are due to appear in the Athlone Magistrates’ Court once charged for murder and possession of prohibited firearm and illegal possession of ammunition.

Three other suspects aged 17, 30 and 43 are due in court for charges of rape and hijacking. The two aged 30 and 43 are due in Wynberg Magistrate Court after they were arrested on a cases of rape. A 30-year-old had allegedly raped his friend after he lured her to his house and forcefully raped her.

The 43-year-old was arrested for allegedly raping his stepdaughter. Both incidents occurred in the area of Nyanga. A 17-year-old suspect was arrested after he was found stripping a vehicle that was reported as hijacked.
