The illicit drug trade was dealt a heavy blow with the confiscation of drugs along the N1 between Laingsburg and Beaufort with an estimated value of more than R770 000.

These confiscations led to the arrest of five suspects who were scheduled to make their first court appearance at the respective courts on 22 March 2023.

On Monday, 20 March 2023 at about 00:15 Beaufort West police members conducted patrols on the N1 near Beaufort West when they noticed a suspicious vehicle along the road. A search of the vehicle led to the confiscation of 28,8 kilogram of dagga with an estimated street value of R57 600-00.

Police confiscated the find and subsequently arrested three occupants aged 36 and 41 on a charge of dealing in drugs.

The trio, from the Cape Metropole, already made their first court appearance in Beaufort West today 22 March 2023. This matter was postponed to 27 June 2023 for further investigation. The accused were released on R3000-00 bail each.

Meanwhile, later the same day 20 March 2023 at about 02:30, Western Cape Provincial traffic officials also confiscated 31 bags of dagga with an estimated street value of R721 000-00 found in the trailer of a minibus taxi. Both the driver and passenger were arrested on charges of dealing in drugs.

The accused, 26 and 37 appeared in the Laingsburg Magistrates’ court on mentioned charge. They were remanded in custody and the case was postponed to 29 March 2023 for bail information.

Preliminary investigation into the find indicates that the consignments were destined for delivery in the Cape Metropole.

Western Cape police management commended the concerted efforts of law enforcement officials who are instrumental in the eradication of drug trafficking into the province.
