Efforts by police to eradicate drug trafficking into the Western Cape once again yielded positive results with the confiscation of a consignment of drugs with an estimated street value of R3 million on the N1 in Prince Albert.
on 20 May 2022, at about 14:00, members attached to the Rural Flying Squad conducted a static vehicle checkpoint along Prince Albert Road on the N1 where they pulled over a Nissan NP200 bakkie.
The vigilant members proceeded with a search when they discovered that the side of the vehicle had been tampered with. Upon further investigation they opened the side and discovered a concealed compartment with seven hidden Tupperware containers filled with what is believed to be Tik.
Police confiscated the 8, 64 kilogram of Tik and arrested the driver. During the search members also found and seized R13 000 of cash, believed to be proceeds of the illicit drug trade.
Preliminary investigation indicates that the consignment was destined for delivery at De Doorns in the Boland.
The 36-year-old suspect remains in police custody and is expected to make his first court appearance in Prince Albert on Monday, 23 May 2022. He is facing a charge of dealing in drugs.
The Western Cape Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Thembisile Patekile, lauded the members for their vigilance in ridding communities of drugs. He said, “The strategic deployment of Rural Flying Squad members along entry and exit points of the province continues to deliver excellent results. The confiscation of this find would go a long way in our efforts to rid communities of the scourge of drugs”, he concluded.
