Concerted efforts by the police to root out the illegal distribution of drugs in the Southern Cape yielded positive results with confiscation of drugs with an estimated street value of R11 000 on the N2 highway near George on Saturday, 22 February 2020, at about 16:45.

Vigilant members attached to the Eden Cluster Crime Combating Team were strategically patrolling the N2 highway when they spotted a known subject of investigation into the illegal drug trade at a hiking spot just outside the entrance to George.

They approached the man and found a backpack in his possession. Upon searching the backpack the members found 170 Mandrax tablets hidden in a plastic bag inside. They confiscated the drugs and arrested the 34-year-old suspect on charges of dealing in drugs.

The suspect is still in custody and he will appear in the George Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 24 February 2020.

Eden Cluster Commander, Maj Gen Oswald Reddy, has lauded the vigilance of the members involved with this arrest and confiscation. He reiterated that efforts to rid communities of drugs will continue because alcohol and drug abuse remains some of the major contributors to series and violent crimes in this region.
