Safer Festive Season operations aimed at eradicating drug trafficking along major entry and exit routes of the Western Cape once again yielded positive results when the police confiscated drugs with an estimated street value of R1.1 million in Laingsburg on Monday, 23 November 2020 at about 02:40.
Members attached to the Laingsburg police and local traffic officials were strategically deployed at Voortrekker Road when they conducted a vehicle checkpoint. They stopped a Toyota Quantum minibus taxi and approached the driver to obtain his personal particulars when he fled on foot.
A search of the vehicle ensued thereafter when 54 bags of dagga weighting 582 kilogram of dagga were found in the trailer of the taxi. The police confiscated the drugs and arrested one of the occupants, a 26-year-old woman, after some of the drugs were positively linked to her.
The 26-year-old suspect is still in custody and she will appear in court on Tuesday, 24 November 2020 on a charge of dealing in drugs.
Western Cape police management applauded the members for their vigilance and commitment to eradicate drug trafficking as well as their efforts to remove drugs from the streets. This arrest and confiscation will hopefully serve a deterrent for drug peddlers that seek to transport drugs into this province. These perpetrators will face the full might of the law when arrested.
