In their quest to protect the Western Cape community from criminals, members of the Major Offences Reaction Team were patrolling the streets of Gugulethu when they were alerted of a Toyota Avanza that was hijacked in the area. The members searched the streets and spotted the vehicle with six male occupants and forced the driver to stop. The occupants made an attempt to flee on foot, but they were no match for SAPS.

One of the suspects refused to surrender the firearm in his hand and was subsequently injured when shots were discharged by police. It was later established that it was an imitation firearm.

The six suspects aged 15 and 21 were detained and are due to make a court appearance in Athlone once they have been charged.

In an unrelated incident in Philippi East a 21 year old man was arrested in possession of an unlicensed firearm when his vehicle was searched during a routine inspection in Stock Road. He too is due in court once he has been charged.
