Police seize Abalone worth 500 000 in Bellville

JOHANNESBURG – Members of the Bellville neighbourhood watch in the Western Cape noticed a suspicious vehicle in their area and alerted police who followed it to an address, where they found dried abalone worth half a million rand and arrested two suspects.

Police said in statement on Friday that the neigbhourhood watch assisted them “in protecting our marine resources”.

Police said acting on the information they followed the suspicious vehicle in Bellville to an address they found 25 boxes with dried abalone, weighing 500kg.

“The estimated value of the abalone is R500,000. Two male suspects aged 33 and 43 years were arrested and they will appear in the Bellville Magistrate’s Court once charged,” police said, adding that management “praised the community for joining the SAPS [South African Police Service] in the fight against crime”.
